“It is not just about art in place but of place, so that it might be a part of the people in that place.” (1)

The project “Multy dimensional crossings” is an public art exhibition and includes preliminary drawings and models of artists invited, which is installed in the East New City of Hangzhou in Dexin Center building. In this exhibition were invited sixteen established and emerging artists, working on the area of public art from France, UK, Bulgaria, the Netherlands, Germany and China. The project anticipates celebrating art in public space, creating a catalyst for learning, community engagement, and social action where people live, work, play, and transit. Mission is to make great art accessible, transform and activate public space, grow the cultural assets of our host cities, and bring a wide diversity of people together through the shared experience of art. With these artworks participants in this competition want to shows and celebrates that artwork-artist-audience is an interdependent trilogy.

Public art originates from artists’ participation in public space, which is an ever-expanding practice. From painting to new media, from sculpture to design, from architecture to performance, it continues to blend into every medium and discipline. Public art let’s us pay attention to the surrounding environment and the position of its own existence by making people enter its set field. It brings together the past, present and future, and provides the intersection of science and thought. Through various postures, art creates a dialogue space between thinking and perception, consciousness and material, triggering profound changes in the spiritual and material environment, so as to reconcile the boundaries between urban culture, visual aesthetics and ecological functions.

This project aims to show the core theme of the Dexin Center East New City Project through public art, as well as the artist’s understanding of Hangzhou and art concept. It is hoped that artists can integrate their personal creativity and regional culture into the project of Chengdong New Town through public art language, further create the brand value of Dexin Center through the radiation of public art in the space, and promote the regional development of Chengdong New Town. Through the intervention and presentation of public art, the cultural symphony of the city will be realized, so as to strive to develop the project into a modern city plate integrating artistic and cultural forms and commercial and economic values.
