“Collective body” is collaborative fiber art project that aims to bring individuals and families to drawing, stitching and work together to create an artwork. The idea of this project is to enable different people to express themselves, communicate and collaborate with others through the process of creating a work of art. The project is inspired by the ‘human body’ and intends to understand how each individual, group and family choose to respond to this subject.
The human body is central to how we understand facets of identity such as gender, race, and ethnicity. People alter their bodies, hair, and clothing to align with or rebel against social conventions and to express messages to others around them. In this project, the human body acts as a creative metaphor, inviting participants to express their individuality, to consider their relationship with the people around them, as well as their connection to the community and place.
The project includes two public fiber art activities called "Fragmented bodies" in which selected community groups will contribute to and inform the creation of new collective artwork. By using textile and stich as a common language, these activities aim to connects people together and create collectivity.
